Jeremiah Culp enlisted on Aug. 24, 1861, and was killed in action on May 31, 1862, at Fair Oaks, VA, becoming the first officer of the county to lose his life in battle. Just before crossing Seven Mile Road, he turned to his captain and said, "My dear Proctor, if anything happens to me, promise me you will write Mary about it." Moments later, a bullet struck under his arm and passed through his body, killing him instantly.
