In 1951, Pine Camp was renamed Camp Drum in honor of Lieutenant General Hugh A. Drum (1879-1951), a New York native who served as Chief of Staff of the First U.S. Army of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I and during World War II commanded the U.S. Army-Department of Hawaii, the First Army, and later the Northeast Defense Command. Throughout this period, Camp Drum was still considered a temporary training facility for the U.S. Army, and soldiers continued to be quartered during summer drills in World War II temporary barracks while U.S. Army units were intermittently deployed there to perform various training exercises.
