During the battle fought here on Aug. 31, 1864, a deep gully south of the site, the bed of a small stream flowing west to the Flint River, was one of the few natural landmarks of the field. North of and parallel to it stood the refused line of Harrow’s division of the 15th, prolonged by Rice’s brigade of Corse’s division, 16th A.C. [US], facing south and extending west to the river. Cleburne’s, Maney’s, and Bate’s divisions of Hardee’s A.C. [CS] attacked from south of the gully, but the ravine proved a fatal obstacle to a concerted assault on the intrenched lines and artillery of Harrow and Rice. Hardee’s attack also signaled the advance of S. D. Lee’s A.C. on the 15th corps front facing Jonesboro.
