Lewis Nez
History
6
Lewis Nez was born in 1900 of the To’di’chi’i’nii (Bitter Water) Clan. He married twice, first to Fannie and second to Bessie Betoney, and had ten children. He worked for the Cedar Ridge Trading Post, hauling supplies, U.S. Postal Mail, and money for local merchants by wagon between Flagstaff, Arizona and Kanab, Utah. His life ended tragically on June 7, 1928, when he and two other men were crossing the Colorado River on the ferry with a Ford Model T on board. The accident was the worst, and it was the ferry’s last trip across the river. Lewis Nez’s body was never recovered.
