Hartwood Acres Park spans 629 acres of mostly wooded land in Hampton and Indiana townships northeast of Pittsburgh, centered on the Hartwood estate created in the 1920s by philanthropist Mary Flinn Lawrence. She and her husband commissioned architect Alfred Hopkins to design the Tudor-style mansion, completed in 1929, and developed the grounds as an equestrian showplace with riding trails, stables, gardens, and other estate buildings. Allegheny County acquired the property in 1969 under conditions preserving the land from subdivision, and after Mary Lawrence’s death in 1974 it opened to the public in 1976. Today it blends historic estate, parkland, arts venue, recreation area, and filming location.
