New Creek Mountain is a rugged ridge in West Virginia’s Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians, spanning Grant and Mineral counties and named for New Creek along its western side. Geologically part of the Wills Mountain Anticline, it lies with Knobly Mountain to the east and the Allegheny Front rising steeply to the west. Oriskany, or Ridgeley, sandstone cliffs encircle the ridge and give it a striking profile. Its best-known features include Saddle Mountain, a distinctive saddle-shaped dip visible from Skyland Overlook on U.S. 50, and the New Creek Mountain Cliffs, an 800-foot escarpment beside a great cleft likened to New England’s Franconia Notch.
