Originally called Holly Creek, this place became the county seat of Dickenson County in 1882 when it was moved from Ervington and was named Clintwood for Major Henry Clinton Wood. The town was incorporated in 1894. After the railroad came to the county in 1915, the population rapidly increased as mineral and timber resources were opened.
