Cowee Gap is a mountain pass in far southern western North Carolina between Highlands and Cashiers, at an elevation of 4,199 feet. On the Eastern Continental Divide, it also marks the boundary between Macon and Jackson counties, separating the Cullasaja River basin from the Chattooga River basin within the larger Tennessee and Savannah drainage systems. U.S. Route 64 crosses the pass at a sharp switchback, making it part of a main mountain route through the area. The gap also holds regional historical importance as the vicinity of the Battle of Cowee Gap between early settlers and the Cherokee, while remaining chiefly a notable geographic landmark.
