Sewee Mound, also called the Old Fort, is an archaeological site near Awendaw on South Carolina’s coast and one of more than 20 prehistoric shell rings found from central South Carolina to central Georgia. Measuring about 149 feet across and rising about 10 feet high, it consists largely of an oyster-shell midden, with a smaller midden nearby. These features link it to the estuarine environment and to a broader pattern of early coastal settlement and long human activity in the region. Its archaeological significance was formally recognized when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
