Francis Marion National Forest spans 263,904 acres in coastal South Carolina north of Charleston, within a lowcountry landscape of swamps, creeks, and coastal plain habitats. Named for Revolutionary War leader Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, it includes communities such as Awendaw, Huger, Jamestown, and McClellanville. Managed as a multiple-use forest, it supports recreation through campsites, boat ramps, rifle ranges, and trails for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, off-road motorcycling, and ATV riding, while also serving timber production, watershed protection, wildlife management, and research. Hurricane Hugo in 1989 devastated much of the older forest, and four wilderness areas preserve parts of its wilder character.
