Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge preserves 66,287 acres of South Carolina’s coast near Awendaw, including marshes, creeks, bays, and barrier islands, much of it accessible only by boat. Created in 1932 as a sanctuary for migratory birds, it also protects threatened and endangered wildlife, notably loggerhead sea turtles, wood storks, and piping plovers. Its barrier islands include Bull Island, known for Boneyard Beach and its stark shoreline of dead trees. The refuge also contributed to red wolf reintroduction efforts and retains historic maritime features, including two surviving Cape Romain lighthouses, while its mainland visitor center interprets the region’s ecosystems and heritage.
