In 1781, one mile south, a Miami Indian party carried out what was undoubtedly the bloodiest massacre in early Kentucky, killing more than 60 pioneers traveling from Squire Boone's Painted Stone Station to the safety of forts at Falls of Ohio. The next day, reinforced by British Capt. McKee's Hurons, they killed 16 of the 25 militia led by Col. John Floyd who had gone to bury the massacre victims.
