Sugar Hill's education system began on this site in 1915. An unmarked cornerstone is the only structural remnant of the first Sugar Hill School. The building was poorly lit and ventilated, needed fresh paint, and received water from a neighbor's well. Supported by a strong commitment to education, the two-room school with one principal, one teacher, and sixty-eight students grew. Sugar Hill School later became Sugar Hill Elementary and Sugar Hill High Schools, and these schools eventually led to the creation of North Gwinnett and Lanier High Schools.
