Cheaha Mountain, or Mount Cheaha, is Alabama’s highest natural point at 2,413 feet, rising in the Talladega Mountains within Cheaha State Park near Delta. Its name likely comes from the Choctaw word chaha, meaning “high.” Formed of erosion-resistant Cheaha quartzite, the mountain stands prominently above the surrounding landscape, especially above Oxford to the west. The summit has long drawn visitors for expansive views and includes Bunker Tower, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, as well as nearby Bald Rock overlook. Opened to the public as part of the state park in 1939, the summit also supports transmission facilities while remaining one of Alabama’s defining natural landmarks.
