High Uintas Wilderness is a protected mountain backcountry in northeastern Utah stretching across the Uinta Mountains in Duchesne and Summit counties. Established in 1984 within Ashley National Forest and Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, it is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. The area includes Kings Peak, Utah’s highest point, and many of the state’s tallest summits above 13,000 feet, set in strongly alpine and subalpine terrain. Seasonal access shapes travel here, with Mirror Lake Highway closed in winter while nearby areas support snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, though snowmobiling is barred inside the wilderness. It remains one of Utah’s premier remote high-elevation landscapes.
