He was a headliner on the Louisiana Hayride, Grand Ole Opry, and concert venues nationwide. His hits included "Wondering," "There Stands the Class," "Slowly," and "In the Jailhouse Now." He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.
