Strawberry Mountain Wilderness is a protected backcountry area in eastern Oregon’s Strawberry Mountain Range within Malheur National Forest, encompassing 69,350 acres of peaks, lakes, forests, and stream headwaters. First designated in 1964 and expanded in 1984, it now includes more than 125 miles of trails and rises from about 4,000 feet to the 9,038-foot summit of Strawberry Mountain. Its sharply varied terrain contains five major life zones, seven alpine lakes, numerous streams, and evidence of ancient oceanic crust, later uplift, volcanism, erosion, and glaciation. The area supports diverse forests, wildflowers, fish, and wildlife, making it one of eastern Oregon’s most important protected mountain landscapes.
