Built in 1865 in John Day, Oregon, this structure began as a supply depot or stagecoach stop and may also have served nearby miners. By 1878 it was leased by the Kam Wah Chung Company, and in 1887 Chinese immigrants Ing Hay, known as Doc Hay, and Lung On bought the business. Their partnership made it a mercantile and Chinese herbal apothecary, creating an unusually complete record of early Chinese life in the American West. After Ing Hay’s death in 1952, the building was abandoned and its intended transfer to the city forgotten until 1967. Restored as a museum, it later gained national historic recognition.
