At Shippensburg, the Raystown Path forked; one branch led directly west over three steep mountains to Burnt Cabins, while the other, taken by General Forbes to avoid heavy grades, went south around Parnells Knob to Fort Loudon, crossing Tuscarora Mountain at Cowan Gap.
