Erie Bluffs State Park preserves 587 acres along the Lake Erie shore in northwestern Pennsylvania, including the state’s largest undeveloped stretch overlooking the lake. Established on June 4, 2004, after the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy acquired the land and transferred it to the Commonwealth, it fulfilled a long effort to keep this shoreline public. Its mile of coast includes high bluffs, old-growth forest, wetlands, savanna, archaeological sites, rare plant habitat, and a notable steelhead fishery. A 2004 biological survey documented exceptional diversity, including 80 bird species and a bank swallow colony of more than 3,000, making the park both a scenic preserve and a benchmark of the predevelopment Lake Erie shore.
