John (Snowshoe) Thompson carried the mail on skis over the Sierra Nevada Mountains from Placerville, California, to Carson City, Nevada, for twenty successive winters from 1856 to 1876. Born in 1827 in Telemark, Norway, he came to California in 1851. He died in 1876 at the age of 49 and was buried in Diamond Valley, Nevada.
