Justin and Frances Petit owned the Petit Ranch House, originally located at 1900 East Wooley Road and built about 1896 to a design by Herman Anlauf. The Petit family emigrated from France to America in 1853, when Justin was two years old and his sister Annette was 12, settling first in Pennsylvania and then Kansas before following Annette and her husband to California. In California, Justin married Frances Kaufman, one of five Kaufman daughters whose father was the first American pioneer to farm in the Santa Clara River Valley, and the couple had seven children. Their success in raising sugar beet and lima bean crops enabled them to become wealthy in Oxnard. The house is an exceptional example of Queen Anne Style and the only house in Heritage Square that fits unambiguously into a definite architectural category, showing the fanciful late Victorian features of irregular rooflines, towers, spindle work, and multiple surface designs and colors. It includes a notable two-story bay window with rare curved glass and colored flash glass panes, and it was the first farmhouse in Ventura County to be electrified.
