The 788th Co. earned the nickname the Fire Devils for its reputation for putting out prairie fires while stationed at Camp Ruteledge in Minnesota. The nickname stayed with the company throughout its service, and the men were proud enough of it to use it as the name of their company newspaper. In this area, the camp kitchen once stood, and part of its concrete foundation and metal food containers from the last company mess can still be seen.
