Goat Mountain is an 8,831-foot peak in Glacier National Park’s Lewis Range in Montana, rising above Otokomi Lake and Goat Lake in the park’s east-central area. Water from its slopes ultimately reaches Saint Mary Lake and the St. Mary River. The mountain is composed of sedimentary rock laid down from the Precambrian through the Jurassic in ancient shallow seas, and its broader setting was shaped by the Lewis Overthrust fault, which beginning about 170 million years ago pushed older Precambrian rock over younger Cretaceous layers. Goat Mountain also lies in an alpine subarctic climate with long, snowy winters, short cool to warm summers, and potentially severe cold and wind chill.
