Lake Valley School District No. 4 developed from school district reorganizations beginning with a site established during the 1892-1893 school term within East Bethel School District No. 15, then formed on July 10, 1911, from East Bethel No. 15, Red Wood No. 16, and Haggy No. 17, later expanding through additions from Odessa No. 14 and other surrounding districts and adjustments with Cloud Chief No. 8, Hopewell No. 43, Rainy No. 29, Center No. 61, and Star No. 23 until, by the time the school closed in 1960, it covered approximately fifty-four and eleven-sixteenths square miles. The school and community were active in band, baseball, basketball, box suppers, shivarees, choral work, Christmas parties, community plays, drama, 4-H Club, fund raisers, Halloween parties, politics, softball, scholastics, and work days. The school building constructed in the 1920s was destroyed by a tornado on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1944, but families of the community cleared the site, cleaned bricks, and prepared for rebuilding; after the tornado, the gym built between 1939 and 1941 by the WPA was converted into classrooms, and when a new school building was constructed in 1944-45 it was attached to the gym, with the buildings remaining in use until the school closed in 1960. Early settlers in the Lake Valley community endured hardships and sacrifices to farm, worship freely, raise children, and establish schools, helping one another in times of need and creating a true community through shared school activities.
