On Dec. 24, 1924, thirty-five people lost their lives while attending a Christmas party in a one room frame school house when a candle on a Christmas tree started a fire. A school building was later built here as a memorial and as a model to point the way to safer county schools across the nation. The school was discontinued in 1943, then dismantled and sold.
