Rainy Mountain, or Sépyáldà in Kiowa, is a rounded hill in southwestern Oklahoma northwest of the Wichita Mountains that became an important landmark on the southern plains, especially for the Kiowas. Rainy Mountain Creek flows northeast from it, and the green winter grass in the creek valley made the area a favored winter camping place. The watershed also brought frequent flooding, with many major and minor floods recorded between 1926 and 1945. To address this, conservation districts in Kiowa, Washita, and Mountain View joined the Soil Conservation Service in 1960 on a watershed project that built 29 flood-control dams. The hill remains significant geographically and in Kiowa memory.
