Elk Lake Guard Station, a Forest Service cabin in Oregon’s Deschutes National Forest near Elk Lake, was built in 1929 as a seasonal base for managing the growing recreation traffic that followed road access, a lodge, and a post office in the area. Moved to a more sheltered site in 1935, it was staffed each summer from the late 1930s into the 1990s for resource protection, maintenance, and visitor assistance. The compact log cabin later became a summer visitor information center after restoration beginning in 1997. Preserved as the site’s only historic structure, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
