Mount Bachelor ski area
Nature
Mount Bachelor ski area, about 22 miles west of Bend on the north side of a Cascade stratovolcano, grew from a small 1958 operation founded by Bill Healy into Oregon’s largest ski resort by area and one of the largest single-mountain resorts in the United States. Expanded through new lifts from the 1960s into the 1980s, it became especially notable for broad terrain, summit access, and an unusually long season supported by heavy snowfall. The resort also built strong freestyle and Nordic programs, trained professional and Olympic athletes, endured major drought losses in 1976, and since 2001 has added some summer activities while remaining defined by its volcanic setting and long spring skiing.
