From 1830 to 1860, Dunmore and Waverly were two stops along the eastern route of the Underground Railroad. In 1886, the Scranton Suburban Railway became the first commercially successful, continuously running electric trolley system in the U.S. By 1890, Scranton became known as "The Anthracite Capitol [sic] of the [W]orld." In 1891, the International Correspondence School was founded in Scranton and became known as "The W[or]lds Schoolhouse." The Scranton Lace Company was founded in 1892. In 1899, Jermyn was the birthplace of First Aid. In 1901, a pioneer cancer research center was established in Scranton. In 1912, Elling O Weeks carried the first newspapers ever delivered from city to city by aeroplane from Scranton to [C]arbondale.
