Ben Johnson Mountain
Nature
Ben Johnson Mountain is a 4,398-foot summit in Jackson County, Oregon, named for Ben Johnson, a local African-American blacksmith. For many years, the summit bore an offensive name. In 1964, its official name was changed to Negro Ben Mountain, and on October 24, 2020, the Oregon Geographic Names Board adopted the current name, Ben Johnson Mountain. The mountain's history reflects both the recognition of the man for whom it was named and the later effort to replace earlier offensive naming.
