One year after Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club opened in 1957, club president and Buick Motor Division public relations director Waldo McNaught organized a golf tournament there. The collaboration among Warwick Hills, Buick, and the Professional Golfers’ Association Tour produced the first Buick Open in June 1958, coinciding with General Motors’ “Golden Milestone” fiftieth anniversary. Company officials allowed use of the Buick name and provided each golfer with a new car during the tournament, creating the first corporate sponsorship of a Professional Golfers’ Association Tour event. Its success began a partnership that continued into the twenty-first century. For five days in June 1958, golfers from across the country came to Grand Blanc for the first tournament, in a field that tour supervisor Harvey Raynor called the greatest in Professional Golfers’ Association Tour history. A fifty-two-thousand-dollar purse, the largest of the 1958 season, attracted many players, while one-dollar admission, free parking, and big-time golf brought more than fifty thousand fans. On the eighteenth hole of the final round, four golfers still had a chance to win, and in near darkness and chilling temperatures Billy Casper sank a putt of three and one-half feet with the tournament’s final shot to win by one stroke, earning nine thousand dollars and a brand new Buick.
