On September 18, 1857, Helen Carpenter wrote that there was deep sand for eight miles and that the road on both sides was strewn with dead cattle, while a number of her train succumbed to the heavy travel and heat along the Truckee River route of the Emigrant Trail's 40 Mile Desert around Promontory at a trail turning point.
