Near Odessa, Delaware, this archaeological site preserves the location of the house and shop where Duncan Beard, a noted Delaware lock-maker and silversmith, lived and worked for about 30 years until his death in 1797. A prominent member of Old Drawyers Presbyterian Church, Beard also served the Revolutionary era war effort by contracting with the State of Delaware in 1776 to manufacture gun locks. The site is important for its connection to his skilled craft and to the colony’s wartime needs, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
