Van Vleck House and Gardens
Nature
Van Vleck House and Gardens in Montclair, New Jersey, is a historic former private estate that has become a non-profit community resource centered on a public botanical garden. Developed over generations of the Van Vleck family, its horticultural importance lies especially in its ericaceous plantings, notably rhododendrons and azaleas, including many hybrids named for family members. The estate’s architectural centerpiece is a Mediterranean villa built in 1916 by Joseph Van Vleck Jr. The property remained in family ownership until 1993, when it passed to The Montclair Foundation, and today its grounds serve the public while the house hosts non-profit events.
