The schooner Sultana is part of the larger Chestertown campus of the Sultana Education Foundation. Since 1997, the Foundation has provided award-winning programs in history and environmental science for tens of thousands of students, teachers, and outdoor enthusiasts. The schooner Sultana provides under-sail educational programs for more than 4,000 students annually, giving passengers opportunities to explore the ecosystem and history of the Chesapeake Bay while raising sails, steering the ship, navigating with 18th century instruments, sampling marine life, and conducting tests to monitor water quality. These programs complement Maryland State Department of Education curriculum standards in social studies and science. During the summer, the Foundation offers children opportunities to explore the Chesapeake Bay aboard the schooner through multi-day live-aboard trips and day programs on the Chester River, fostering appreciation of the Chesapeake while encouraging participants to learn new skills, make friends, and gain confidence in their abilities. The Foundation also offers regular public sailing opportunities aboard Sultana for ages five and up, including two-hour sails in which passengers help steer the schooner, hoist the sails, explore the crew quarters, and watch the schooner's swivel guns fired, and the vessel is also available on a limited basis for charters and private events.
