Phantom Falls
Nature
Phantom Falls, also called Coal Canyon Falls, is a seasonal waterfall in Coal Canyon near Oroville, California, within the North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve. Water plunges 166 feet before a grotto, making the falls a notable wet-season feature. Flowing mainly from late autumn to early spring, it disappears in the dry season, giving rise to the name Phantom Falls. A small pool at the base supports the Coastal Range newt, a subspecies of California newt. Behind the falling water, the grotto holds the shaft of an abandoned gold mine from the California Gold Rush, where research still continues.
