North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve is a 3,315-acre protected area north of Oroville in northern California, acquired by the state in 1993 to protect a distinctive volcanic landscape and the Northern Basalt Flow Vernal Pools, one of the state’s rarest seasonal wetland habitats. These shallow pools form on the basalt plateau with winter and spring rains, then dry seasonally, supporting sensitive plants and animals, including species found only locally or in California. The reserve also includes grasslands, wooded ravines, seasonal waterfalls, wildflower displays, and diverse birdlife, and it remains important as both a protected natural area and a refuge for rare vernal pool ecosystems.
