Mary Elizabeth Sawyer, born in Sterling, Massachusetts, lived from 1806 to 1889 and was associated with her little lamb. The verse “Mary had a little lamb, Its fleece was white as snow, And everywhere that Mary went, The lamb was sure to go” is attributed here to John Roulstone. A memorial to the poem was dedicated in May 1991 in Sterling.
