On this spot, from 1770 to 1774, John Tanner, William Weber, Augustine Eastin, David Tinsley, Joseph Anthony, Jeremiah Walker, and John Weatherford were imprisoned as apostles of religious liberty. In gratitude for the blessings of spiritual religion and freedom of conscience won through their sufferings, the churches of the Middle District Baptist Association erected this memorial in 1925.
