Yellow Bluff Fort Historic State Park in Jacksonville, Florida, near the mouth of the St. Johns River, preserves the remains of a Civil War military position at a strategic river point. Although called a fort, it was actually an armed and fortified camp built in early 1862 to help protect shipping supply lines to Jacksonville and through the St. Johns valley from Union attacks. At times, more than 350 personnel were stationed there, and the camp remained in use until the war ended. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, the site also features reconstructed Confederate and Union encampments that interpret the area’s wartime significance.
