Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens is a nonprofit garden on a 135.82-acre city-owned site in Jacksonville, Florida, opened in 2008 after years of volunteer planning and restoration. The land was strip-mined for zircon and other minerals from 1941 to 1961, then later bought by the city as a buffer for a wastewater treatment plant. After decades of limited disturbance, 13 ecosystems developed there, including ravine, marsh, and sand hill habitats. Local conservation supporters organized the nonprofit in 2004, and with city support and volunteer labor transformed the property into a community-built garden with trails, preserved mature trees, varied wildlife, and educational features.
