Shade Furnace Archaeological District in Shade Township, Pennsylvania preserves the remains of a plantation-style iron forge community that operated from 1808 to 1858. Its surviving features include the ruins of a stone blast furnace, a forge site, an ore pit, a farmstead, and a late 19th-century coal mine complex. Archaeological evidence from abandoned buildings helps reveal how this place functioned as both an industrial operation and a rural community. The site is significant for showing the layered history of ironmaking followed by later mining activity, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
