Osprey Falls is a major waterfall on the Gardner River in Yellowstone National Park’s Sheepeater Canyon, dropping about 150 feet in a single plunge. Named in 1885 by members of the Hague Survey for the osprey seen in Yellowstone, it quickly became noted for its dramatic setting. In 1886, George Wood Wingate highlighted the canyon’s near-vertical walls, the river’s uninterrupted leap, and the stark contrast between white water and the dark chasm below. The great depth and steep ledges of Sheepeater Canyon give the falls much of their appeal, helping make Osprey Falls one of the Gardner River’s notable cascades and a valued backcountry destination.
