Golden Gate Canyon is a short, steep canyon in northwestern Yellowstone National Park through which Glen Creek drops sharply toward the Gardner River. It became an important part of Yellowstone’s early road system when a road built in 1884–85 replaced the difficult route over Snow Pass, under the direction of U.S. Army Lieutenant Dan Christie Kingman. The yellow rock gave the canyon and pass their name. Its constricted terrain demanded unusual engineering, including a wooden trestle, a concrete viaduct rebuilt in 1900 under Captain Hiram M. Chittenden, and later replacements during road work from 1930 to 1934 and again in 1977.
