Bunsen Peak, an 8,564-foot mountain in Yellowstone National Park south of Mammoth Hot Springs, is one of the northern park’s more prominent peaks, standing east of Kingman Pass along the Grand Loop Road. Ferdinand V. Hayden and Captain John W. Barlow first reached its summit in 1871 during Yellowstone’s early surveys, and it received its current name in 1872 during the second Hayden Geological Survey. A competing name, Observation Mountain, was proposed that year by E. S. Topping but did not last. The peak honors German chemist Robert Bunsen, whose work included theories about volcanic geysers, linking his name to Yellowstone’s geothermal landscape.
