About 4300 mission Indians, Spanish settlers, and pioneer settlers are buried in unmarked graves in this sacred ground. The first burial at the mission was a child, Maria Trinidad, who was buried on April 23, 1798, marked with the sign of the Holy Trinity, with Fr. José Martiarena officiating.
