On a spring journey from LaPointe to Ontonagon, Baraga and an Indian guide set out across ice to shorten the trip rather than follow the laborious shore route, but after starting they discovered that the rotten, honeycombed ice beneath them was an ice floe drifting out to sea. The guide became greatly alarmed, but Baraga assured him they would not perish and told him, “Trust in God, our loving Father and Protector.” Eventually the winds shifted, the ice floe moved toward land, and they came ashore not far from Ontonagon after traveling over 60 miles in that one day. To the Indian’s joy, Baraga exclaimed, “See, we have traveled a great distance, but we have walked very little.”
