Springer Mountain, a 3,782-foot Blue Ridge summit in northern Georgia, stands at a divide where the ridge splits toward the Cohutta Mountains and Mount Oglethorpe. On the border of Fannin and Gilmer counties, it is best known as the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail and the southern end of the Benton MacKaye Trail. It became the Appalachian Trail’s southern endpoint in 1958 after development at Mount Oglethorpe made that site less suitable. The mountain is also central to trail culture, with nearby approach routes, shelters, a summit register, and enduring uncertainty over whether its name honors William G. Springer or John Springer.
