The Grumman F9F-2 Panther was a fighter-bomber in service from 1949 to 1962 with a crew of one. It used a Pratt and Whitney J42-6/P8 power plant with 5950 pounds of thrust, had a maximum speed of 579 miles per hour, a range of 1,312 miles, dimensions of 38 feet wingspan, 38 feet length, and 13 feet 3 inches height, and a gross weight of 18,721 pounds. Its weapons included four 20 millimeter cannon, two 500 pound bombs, and eight 5 inch rockets. During the Korean Conflict, the Panther delivered more ordnance than any other jet aircraft. Panthers made up 87% of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps jets flown in Korea, and 715 F9Fs flew a total of 78,000 sorties. One F9F delivered over 400,000 pounds of bombs, fired over 100,000 rounds, and wore out 16 guns in combat. The F9F in the DVHAA collection is Bureau #127120. Bureau #127130 last operated out of NADC Johnsville, Pennsylvania, and was restored and donated to the DVHAA by Arthur Alan Wolk of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1987.
